FactCheck: A Video About Onana’s Return to Man United is Misleading!

An online blogger claims that the Cameroon-born Manchester United goalkeeper, Andre Onana has returned to his team.

A social media blog tweeting with the username @Naija_PR  posted a video of the Manchester United goalkeeper, Andre Onana with a caption that he has returned to Manchester United. 

“Onana back with Manchester United,” the caption reads.

It would be recalled that Onana joined the Cameroon side at the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Friday, January 19 to play against Senegal.

Following the Indomitable Lions’ defeat to the Nigeria Super Eagles on Saturday night, January 27 at the round of 16 of the ongoing tournament, @Naija_PR shared a video about his arrival at Manchester. This triggered people’s emotions and made some of them question Onana’s loyalty to his country.

The post has garnered 3,043 likes, 326 reposts, 55 bookmarks, and 160 quotes as at the time of writing this report. This was why FactCheckAfrica is seeking to verify it.

One X user with the name James Anthony said, “This guy didn’t even go back home with his team mate very disrespectful.”

BigDc, another user said, “He is bigger than the whole Cameron squad, much love onana. (with love emoji).”


Findings show that the claim is FALSE!

When subjected to verification, the result shows that the video posted was an old one. Our fact-checker discovered that the video has been on the internet since August when Onana joined Manchester United from Inter Milan. 

In the video which was shared as a reel on Facebook by Goal Africa on August 24, 2023, Onana is seen signing an autograph with cheering fans which is peculiar to every new signee to a club.

Also, no reputable media has reported Onana’s return to Manchester.
