A WhatsApp long-text purported to be from the Tinubu/Shettima Presidential Campaign Council in Osun State claimed there are plans to use a regional security agency, Western Nigeria Security Network (WNSN) popularly known as ‘Amotekun’, to rig the presidential and national assembly elections for the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) candidates in the state.
The claim made through a release shared on a WhatsApp group (SRJ Affairs) states “A credible source in the state indicated that the sacked Governor Adeleke and the leadership of the PDP have concluded an arrangement to make use of the Amotekun corps to rig the elections by kitting some political thugs in the outfit of the Amotekun who will be mobilized to prevent the opposition and their supporters from voting”.
The text is widely spreading on several WhatsApp groups and that necessitated the need for the fact-check.
Verification
Calls to election observers in the state reported no sight of such an outfit among the security operatives available. Also, further checks by FactCheckElections revealed a news report by Tribune Online published September 22, 2022 that IGP bans use of Amotekun, ESN, other local security outfits for campaigns.
